Sojourner Truth was born into slavery in New York as Isabella Baumfree (after her father's owner, named Baumfree). She was sold several times and while owned by the John Dumont family in Ulster County she married Thomas, another of Dumont's slaves. She had five children with Thomas. In 1827 New York law emancipated all slaves but Isabella had already left her husband and run away with her youngest child. She went to work for the family of Isaac Van Wagenen. While working for the Van Wagenen's -- whose name she used briefly -- she discovered that a member of the Dumont family had sold one of her children to slavery in Alabama. Since this son had been emancipated under New York law, Isabella sued in court and won his return. Isabella experienced a religious conversion, moved to New York City and to a Methodist perfectionist commune, and there came under the influence of a religious prophet named Mathias. The commune fell apart a few years later with allegations of sexual improprieties and even murder. Isabella herself was accused of poisoning and sued successfully for libel. She continued as well during that time to work as a household servant. In 1843, she took the name Sojourner Truth, believing this to be on the instructions of the Holy Spirit and became a traveling preacher (the meaning of her new name). In the late 1840s she connected with the abolitionist movement, becoming a popular speaker. In 1850 she also began speaking on woman suffrage. Her most famous speech "Ain't I a Woman?" was given in 1851 at a womens rights convention in Ohio. Sojourner Truth met Harriet Beecher Stowe, who wrote about her for the Atlantic Monthly and wrote a new introduction to Truth's autobiography "The Narrative of Sojourner Truth". She moved to Michigan and joined yet another religious commune, this one associated with the Friends. She was at one point friendly with Millerites, a religious movement that grew out of Methodism and later became the Seventh Day Adventists. During the Civil War, Sojourner Truth raised food and clothing contributions for black regiments and met Abraham Lincoln at the White House in 1864. While there she tried to challenge the discrimination that segregated street cars by race. After the Civil War ended, Sojourner Truth advocated for some time a "Negro State" in the west. She spoke mainly to white audiences and mostly on religion, Negro rights and womens rights, and on temperance. Immediately after the Civil War she tried to organize efforts to provide jobs for black refugees from the war. Active until 1875, when her grandson and companion fell ill and died, Sojourner Truth returned to Michigan where her health deteriorated and she died in 1883 in a Battle Creek sanitorium of infected ulcers on her legs. She was buried in Battle Creek, Michigan, after a very well-attended funeral.

Sojourner Truth

Dear Mr Hall
ReplyDeleteInformation within your Web Page has prompted us to contact you personally as you appear to have a genuine interest in Sojournertruth.
For almost two hundred years the full true story of Sojournertruth has not been told.
It has been suppressed and hidden away within the pages of history.
The rich and powerful have told their side of her story, leaving Sojournertruth standing alone declaring her understanding of freedom and justice.
She has amplified her life in her chosen spirit name of Sojournertruth.
Throughout the world Christians, Afro Americans, men and women have all rejoiced in her triumphs. Isabella Baumfree, or Isabella Van Wageners, as she would later call herself, was searching for a good God fearing life.
She wanted to embrace the Christian life style, along with helping those who crossed her path.
While in New York working for the respectable, successful retired business man Mr Elijah Pierson she came face to face with the Prophet Matthias.
The meeting between Isabella (Sojournertruth) and the self-proclaimed Prophet Matthias was the first contact of what could be considered the refiner’s fire years for Sojournertruth.
During her time with Prophet Matthias, she experienced immorality, deception, demonic possession, false accusations, and financial ruin!
She was in many ways spiritually, emotionally, and financially raped time and time again as she struggled to find Christianity within the Zion that Prophet Matthias was attempting to establish!
Reflecting upon her time in New York City Sojournertruth reasoned and then concluded ‘that everything she had undertaken in the city of New York had finally proved a failure; and where her hopes had been raised the highest, there she felt the failure had been the greatest, and the disappointment most severe.’
The dramatic experiences of Sojournertruth while in New York were undoubtedly a major turning point in her life.
After reflection upon the activities within New York Isabella Van Wageners (Sojournertruth) concluded ‘that she had been taking part in a great drama, which was, in itself, but one great system of robbery and wrong.’
So what did happen in New York to create such a vivid impression on her?

Sojournertruth & Matthias
The name Sojournertruth has become established with in the hearts and minds of modern humanity, she is a symbol of Freedom, Justice, Strength and Endurance. The established Icon of Sojournertruth helps humanity understand the importance of communication and honesty. The name Sojournertruth is a pseudonym adopted after the point of departure from New York in 1843.
Within the book "Clash of the Prophets, The Beginning" we read:
In time and between the years of 1843 and 1850 the evidence, both direct and indirect, confirms the evolution of Isabella's name from "SOJOURNER" into "SOJOURNER TRUTH."
The name of "Sojourner truth" was penned by Mr Oliver Gilbert in 1850. When Gilbert penned this name he placed a space between the "SOJOURNER" and the "Truth."
In time the name once again evolved and the accepted name for Isabella is now established within the hearts and minds of humanity as "SOJOURNERTRUTH." The name of "SOJOURNERTRUTH" is recognised as a symbol of justice and freedom for all, regardless of nationality, gender, or religion!'
The connections between Sojournertruth and Prophet Matthias are vitally important. Sojournertruth introduced Matthias into the Pierson Christian community. Within this community Matthias was able to infiltrate some of the most influential families within New York Society. As Matthias expanded his dictatorial control, Sojournertruth witnessed both his rise to power and his fall from grace and favour into the cells at Sing-Sing prison. She was the first to join with Matthias and the last to leave him.
The true story of the connections between Sojournertruth and Matthias while together in New York should never be forgotten!
Matthias called himself "the Spirit of truth."
Isabella Van Wagener called herself "Sojournertruth"
After reflection upon the activities within New York Isabella Van Wagener (Sojournertruth) concluded 'that she had been taking part in a great drama, which was, in itself, but one great system of robbery and wrong.'

Dear Mrs Hall

My new Web Site is now open. Mrs Hall you and your readers are very welcome as I know that you have a real love for Sojournertruth.

Mrs Hall the connection into the principal of living history through remembrance has been exemplified when Secretary Clinton remarked: "She is a sojourner of truth, by truth, and for truth. We hear you echoing down through the years of history, we believe that your journey is not yet over, and we will make the rest of that journey with you."
Part of the journey which all interested students and careful readers understand is the importance of continuous information and knowledge: with the aforementioned in mind may I present the following on Sojournertruth.
When Sojournertruth arrived at the White House she was accompanied by her good friend Lucy Colman. Together the two friends communicated with President Abraham Lincoln. According to Sojournertruth:
‘The president was seated at his desk. Mrs. C. said to him, “This is Sojourner Truth, who has come all the way from Michigan to see you.” He then arose, gave me his hand, made a bow, and said, “I am pleased to see you.”
I said to him, Mr. President, when you first took your seat I feared you would be torn to pieces, for I likened you unto Daniel, who was thrown into the lion’s den; and if the lions did not tear you into pieces, I knew that it would be God that had saved you; and I said if he spared me I would see you before the four years expired, and he has done so, and now I am here to see you for myself.
He then congratulated me on my having been spared. Then I said, I appreciate you, for you are the best president who has ever taken the seat. He replied: ‘I expect you have reference to my having emancipated the slaves in my proclamation. But,’ said he, mentioning the names of several of his predecessors (and among them emphatically that of Washington), ‘they were all just as good, and would have done just as I have done if the time had come. If the people over the river [pointing across the Potomac] had behaved themselves, I could not have done what I have; but they did not, which gave me the opportunity to do these things.’ I then said, I thank God that you were the instrument selected by him and the people to do it. I told him that I had never heard of him before he was talked of for president. He smilingly replied, ‘I had heard of you many times before that.’
He then showed me the Bible presented to him by the colored people of Baltimore, of which you have no doubt seen a description. I have seen it for myself, and it is beautiful beyond description. After I had looked it over, I said to him, this is beautiful indeed; the colored people have given this to the head of the government, and that government once sanctioned laws that would not permit its people to learn enough to enable them to read this book. And for what? Let them answer who can.
I must say, and I am proud to say, that I never was treated by any one with more kindness and cordiality than were shown to me by that great and good man, Abraham Lincoln, by the grace of God president of the United States for four years more. He took my little book, and with the same hand that signed the death-warrant of slavery, he wrote as follows:
For Aunty Sojourner Truth October 29, 1864 A. LINCOLN’
