Mary Surratt
(May 1820 or 1823 - July 7, 1865)

Mary Elizabeth Jenkins Surratt (1823 - 1865) was convicted of taking part in the conspiracy to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln in 1865. The assassination of Lincoln was carried out on Good Friday, April 14, 1865. The president was shot while attending a play with his wife Mary at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. by actor John Wilkes Booth and died the following morning at 7:22.

Found guilty and sentenced to death, Mary Surratt was the first woman executed by the United States federal government. She was hanged alongside three other conspirators on July 7, 1865. She was the mother of John Surratt, a friend of Booth's, who was accused of plotting with to kidnap Lincoln and suspected of involvement in the assassination. John Surratt stood trial in a civilian court in 1867 and was freed when the jury could not deliver a verdict.
