Fort Koshkonong

Fort Koshkonong was established in July 1832 on the east bank of the Rock River present-day Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. General Henry Atkinson was the commander of the fort during the Black Hawk War. It was used as a station for local militia units and the U.S. regulars in the region to scout the British Band. Black Hawk was in the same general area but evaded capture and fled toward the Wisconsin River. The original fort was abandoned after Atkinson defeated Black Hawk on August 2, 1832, at the Battle of Bad Axe. Settlers populated the site starting in 1836 and they used materials from the abandoned fort to establish their community. Today there is a replica of the fort built during the 1930s by the WPA.
